What China's consumers most wanted 25 years ago was a color TV set. They longed for “wheels” which means merely a bicycle, instead of a private car. Today, great changes have taken place in China. After more than 30 years’ reform, Chinese people becomes financially better off; and with the development of national automobile industry over the three decades, car prices have been ratcheting down, which made the big toys affordable for ordinary Chinese people.
Zhangming, an employee with a joint venture, just bought a private car last year. When it comes to the purchasing, he said that possessing a private car had been one of his dreams. In his childhood, he loved very much the way of life shown in foreign movies as driving freely for shopping and travelling. Now, given that his income was pretty decent and the car price was acceptable, he decided to buy one, which later led him to a more relaxed and colorful life. Rather than taking jam-packed public transportation service, he can drive to work comfortably while enjoying music. In addition, the car enables him to travel with his friends to suburban areas on weekends, in comparison with the days when, having not yet bought his car, he had to stay at home or strolling within the downtown.
Like Mr.Zhang, car owners have experienced both happiness and annoyance from their private cars. The first is traffic jam. Cities’ traffic problem has been increasingly severe because the number of private cars increases. Therefore, Mr.Zhang has to leave home at 7:00 a.m. everyday for work to make sure staying ahead of 8:00 a.m. working time, in spite of the close proximity to his company. The second is the rocketing oil price, which pushed up the running costs of the car. So for many car owners, they may be able to afford a car, but, for the time being, unable to run it.
“If the traffic status quo keeps worsening and pump price continues to rise,” he added, “I’m going to take subway to work, which only takes 20 minutes. The ticket price is quite lower than the cost of driving.”
Mr. Zhang’s idea is typical for general car owners. With the fact that public transportation in China becomes more and more convenient and comfortable, an increasing number of car owners would prefer public transportation. The Chinese people, like many in other foreign metropolises, would certainly undergo a circle in transportation that they begin with private cars but end up with public transportation service.
